Edibles feel different from smoking or vaping because the body processes them differently. The effect usually arrives later, lasts longer, and can feel much stronger than people expect the first time.
The core rule is simple: start low, wait properly, and do not redose out of impatience.
Why Edibles Surprise People
When you inhale cannabis, the effect arrives quickly. When you eat it, your body has to digest it first. That delay is what gets people into trouble.
- Onset can take 30 minutes to 2 hours
- Peak effects often arrive after 2 to 4 hours
- Total duration can stretch from 4 hours to well beyond 8
The classic mistake is taking a gummy, feeling nothing after 45 minutes, and taking another. Then both doses hit at once.
A Practical Dosing Guide
Tolerance varies massively, so there is no universal "normal" dose. For visitors or first-timers, conservative dosing is the only sensible approach.
- 1 to 2.5 mg: very light start or microdose
- 5 mg: low dose for many people
- 10 mg: already strong for beginners
- 20 mg or more: much higher chance of anxiety, confusion, or heavy sedation
If you do not know your tolerance, treat 5 mg as a serious starting point, not a trivial one.
The Label Problem
In grey-market or poorly controlled settings, edible labels may be inaccurate. A product listed at one strength may contain much more or much less than the packaging claims.
That means two things:
- Avoid assuming a branded-looking product is reliable
- Be more cautious, not less, when the source is unfamiliar
What to Do If You Took Too Much
A bad edible experience can feel intense, but the safest response is usually calm, time, and a controlled environment.
- Do not panic. The effect will pass.
- Sit or lie down somewhere quiet and safe.
- Drink water and avoid alcohol.
- Slow your breathing and reduce stimulation.
- If you can sleep, sleep.
If there is chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, or a reaction that feels medically serious, call 112 or go to emergency care.
Edible Safety Rules
- Start with 5 mg or less if you are inexperienced
- Wait at least 90 minutes before considering more
- Do not mix with alcohol if you want a predictable experience
- Use them in a safe place, not before travel, nightlife chaos, or a long walk home
- Keep them clearly labeled and away from children and pets
